Report: Lifelong learning (German) as a "Bufdi"

Be there for others!

You have come to Germany and are looking for a meaningful challenge? You can imagine helping other people? Then you might like the Bundesfreiwilligdienst (BFD). Here, you can gain experiences for life.

At the Freiwilligendienst you visit various seminars.

Whether day-care, kindergarten or afternoon care, working with children will bring you further!

The Bundesfreiwilligendienst is a programme in which men and women can take part. It is irrelevant how old you are there. You should however have finished your compulsory schooling in Germany. This means that in whatever state you live in, you must be at least 15 or 16 years old.

Multiple possibilities in the Bundesfreiwilligendienst

If you participate in the Bundesfreiwilligendienst, you would take care of, for example, elderly people in a nursing home. Alternatively, you can help people in a hospital. Or look after children in a children’s home. You can do something for others in sports clubs or museums too. Or you can do something for the environment. You have a lot of opportunities.

Gather experiences

Voluntarily helping other people is also good for you. You meet new people and can practice your German when you speak to them. As well as this, you learn lots of things which will later be important for a career, e.g. how to get on with others. And when you do apply for a job, it is good if it says in your application that you have volunteered to help others.

What you should know

The Bundesfreiwilligendienst generally lasts for 12 months. In certain circumstances it can also last 6 or 18 months. For you to be able to participate in the Bundesfreiwilligendienst, you need a resident permit which allows you to work in Germany. You can however, get a residence permit especially for the Bundesfreiwilligendienst.

You can search at www.bundesfreiwilligendienst.de >> Der Bundesfreiwilligendienst on the right side for companies in Germany, which offer a Bundesfreiwilligendienst. Should you not get an immediate place it’s not the end of the world. Places are continuously freeing up.
